Nurse Education Plan Fails
Despite lobbying from nurses and physicians, the U.S. House of Representatives failed to pass the 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Act by a veto-proof margin. The legislation would have provided funding for the nation’s nursing education programs and to recruit new nurses into the profession, promote career advancement within nursing, and recruit nurses into critical shortage areas. The legislation was vetoed Nov. 13 by President Bush, saying “Health care, education, job training, and other goals can be achieved without this excessive spending if the Congress sets priorities.”

Rhode Island to Enter Nurse Compact
Rhode Island will in 2008 become the 23rd state to join the Nurse Compact. The Compact allows a nurse to have one license (in his or her state of residency) and to practice in other states (both physical and electronic), subject to each state's practice law and regulation. Under mutual recognition, a nurse may practice across state lines unless otherwise restricted.
