12/19/2005 IMMIGRATION ALERT:
H-1 & GREEN CARD QUOTA INCREASES FAIL TO PASS

In a stunning last-minute change of tack, Congress stripped away all of the favorable business immigration provisions from the Budget Reconciliation Bill this weekend. The provisions had been overwhelmingly supported by Senators in the Judiciary Subcommittee. The Budget bill passed shortly after 5:00AM ET today. Among other things, these provisions had called for increases to the H-1 and Green card quota.

(See: http://www.hammondlawfirm.com/alerts/10.25b.2005_alert.htm). It is expected that the President will shortly sign the Budget legislation.

This turn of events may convince stakeholders that wide-spread business immigration relief is near-impossible. After the new year, HLG will re-commit itself to working on targeted legislative efforts for business immigration reform aimed at our clients' needs. As you may be aware, this past spring HLG attorneys were leaders in the fight to increase healthcare immigration roles. (See: http://www.hammondlawfirm.com/alerts/05.04.2005healthcare_alert.htm ). If you are interested in donating time and money to this effort, please stay tuned to HLG's Immigration Alerts and please be prepared to act this spring.
