05/06/2004 HEALTHCARE IMMIGRATION ALERT:
NEW CGFNS POLICY FOR CANADIAN NURSES
To speed up the processing time for a VisaScreen, CGFNS has implemented two
policies on behalf of Canadian nurses in TN status.
1. Nursing Education: CGFNS will accept alternative education for a Canadian
nurse who lacks the required theory or clinical hours if the nurse has: (a)
substantially completed comparable requirements; (b) has passed the NCLEX;
(c) has been practicing as a Registered Nurse in the U.S. continuously for
three years without disciplinary action or adverse incident reported to the
board of nursing. The nurse will be required to submit to CGFNS a
self-report detailing her place of employment and duration of practice in
the U.S.
2. Transcript Requirements: CGFNS will accept copies of transcripts from
state boards of nursing if the state board of nursing verifies that the
transcripts came directly to them from the authorized source. This will
alleviate the delay in a nurse getting transcripts directly from the school.
Both policies will remain in effect until December 31, 2005. CGFNS has vowed
to process all VisaScreen applications currently filed for Canadian nurses
before the new healthcare certification law goes into effect on July 26,
2004.
