TERMS OF STAY FOR NONIMMIGRANT VISAS

 B-1 (temporary business visitor) Initially available for up to six months; with multiple six month extensions available.
 H1B (temporary worker) Initially available for up to three years. The visa can be renewed for a total of six years.
 TN (Canadian/Mexican temporary worker) Initially available for up to one year; with an unlimited number of extensions available.
 L-1 (intracompany transferee) Initially available for one year for “start up” companies and three years for others. Term of stay may not exceed seven years for managers and executives, and five years for aliens with specialized knowledge.
 E-1/E-2 (treaty-trader/treaty investor) Initially available for two years; with a unlimited number of extensions available. Each entry into the U.S. provides the alien with a new period of two years. There is no limit on the number of years for which extensions may be granted. No limit on total period of time in the U.S.
 F-1 (academic student) For the duration of the full-time academic program.
 M (vocational or nonacademic student) For the duration of the course of study or one year, whichever is less.
  J-1 (USIA-designated exchange visitor) The duration depends upon the type of J-1 program the foreign national is attending.
 Q (INS-designated cultural exchange visitor) For the duration of the Q program or 15 months, whichever is less. The Q visa holder also has a one year foreign residency requirement before (s)he can re-enter the U.S.
 O-1 (entertainers and athletes of "extraordinary ability") The duration depends upon the type of event or competition the foreign national is attending. The O-1 visa holder may remain in the U.S. for the duration of the performance or event (s)he is attending.
 P (Other entertainers and athletes) The duration depends upon the type of event or competition the foreign national is attending. The P visa holder may remain in the U.S. for the duration of the performance or event (s)he is attending.
 R (religious worker) Initially available for up to three years, with extensions available for a total of five years.
